Chapter Sixteen

Alban

I was not afraid of anything in this world. There was nothing to be thrown at me I could not manage, no fate that could destroy me. I prided myself on steadfast resilience, my ability to veer away from stifling traditions and thrive, but staring into her eyes, everything I had taken for granted unraveled.

The thought of her leaving, of losing her, was intolerable. She had only just arrived and shared her wonder with me. I could not think to give her away so soon. Closing my eyes for a moment, I wondered if I could ever bear her loss at all.

“Okay.” She fought for mettle, despite the flicker of fear in her eyes. “I can do that.”

“You must not concern yourself beyond then,” I warned, wanting to make myself clear. “I shall decide your fate, and you shall comply.”

“Alban.” She sounded pained as she implored me. “Please.”

“I do so love to hear you beg.” I grinned, toying with her. “But I prefer the other title you used.”

“Master.” She blew out a breath, and I could tell it took every effort not to roll her eyes. “Be reasonable. I can’t stay here. Your brother would surely discover me, then what happens?”

I tensed at her shrewd point, irritated not to have thought of it first. No doubt, on a long enough timeline. Rochelle was right. Rasmie would fast notice my absence and might even send men to search for me. The inevitable conclusion of that search would be the woman I coveted more than any other, bared and bound for his entertainment, both our fates hanging in the balance. I could not tolerate that, would not permit it to transpire.

“Are you intentionally being disobedient?” I ignored the worry, acknowledging I could not hold her here forever but was far happier fantasizing I could. A life entangled with this girl was a far more exciting prospect than any I had imagined.

“No, I…” She flushed, presumably searching for the right words to appease me. “I only want to make you see sense, I—”

I swallowed her complaint with my unforgiving kiss, taming her pretty mouth until I felt her soften beneath me. Only when her sensual moans filled the canvas did I give her room for air.

“I told you to leave those concerns to me.”

She was so beautiful, but I sensed a world of angst inside her, as though she knew no inner peace. I wondered what had happened in her life that she could never let down her guard, then recalled she had inferred a sour relationship with her mother. I had never known my mother, who had died shortly after my birth, but I knew well enough how complex and rattling families could be. Rochelle deserved peace of mind, and I sought to be the man who brought her that serenity, the one who quieted her mind the way I had silenced it last night.

“All you need to do is obey.”

“Yes, Master.” All at once, the playful beast who had sparred with me last night returned, the glint in her eyes conveying her needs.
